VALENTINI LOIZOU

Valentini is a Greek Cypriot Pianist and Composer. Born in Nicosia on the beautiful island of Cyprus she immersed herself in the world of music and piano sound from an early age. As a classically trained pianist and graduate from Charles University in Prague, she has had many experiences over the years as a solo performer, as well as with chamber groups and orchestras, before finally deciding to dedicate her musical life to composing. Her background, education and experiences have motivated her to forge her own path in musical expression by creating and performing her own music.

Now a Berlin based artist she aspires to bring people together by returning to the essence of creating and sharing music from a soulful, heartfelt space. Her first two Albums ‘Reflections’ and ‘Belonging’ released in 2022 and 2023 respectively, are a tribute to the instrument that she has grown to love since childhood. Valentini’s music is often described as dreamy, cinematic, lyrical and emotional inviting the listener to dive deeper into one’s heart and uncover the special meaning that it reveals for them.

Pianist – Composer

Why do you compose and what is your message as an artist?

I was not always aware of my ability to compose. I began my musical journey as a classically trained artist, believing that my path was a predetermined one, and limited as to who I was meant to be as an artist. In spite of my great love for classical music, I never felt quite at ease, or that I could fit into this ‘role’ I was assigned. It took some years for me to re-discover this part of my Soul, a place within the music field where I now feel I ‘belong’.

This has since become a message from me to my audience to have the courage to go on a deeper journey of self-discovery and follow a path aligned to our Soul, even if the road ahead seems unknown, uncomfortable or not accepted by the outside world. The most brave thing we can do is trust and follow our own Heart.

What inspires the creation of your music?

The music I compose is the channel for all my experiences and the lens through which I reflect on life and the mystery that enfolds Creation. How can we express the inexpressible and all which cannot be seen by our physical eyes but deeply felt through our hearts? Life itself thus becomes an inspiration and the journey ahead a catalyst for deeper growth and reflection that is mirrored in my work.

The marvel of nature, the joy of being alive, the excitement to experience and the curiosity to discover is what fuels me and opens up my spirit to infinite possibilities of creation. Music is such a vehicle of communication for all the emotions, subtle energies and impressions that cannot be fully grasped by the spoken word; a bridge that connects my heart to the hearts of my listeners.

What does it mean to be a composer as a woman?

As a woman in the arts, I feel that female performing composers have not been represented enough in past years and concerts created by solo neoclassical female composers are not so widespread or common. It might also be challenging to envision what the life of a woman composer looks like, when a lot of time is dedicated to music creation and performance, especially when society has clearly defined what her role should be like. I grew up in a small Greek island where the respect for traditional roles and ideas can also prove inflexible as to the possibilities and options for women artists.

Adding to this the fact that I have decided not to follow a predetermined path as a classically trained pianist, it feels even rebellious to forge a path that goes against expected norms. My experience has motivated me to inspire younger artists to have the courage and self-awareness to follow their true passion and heart’s calling, so that they can create from an authentic Soulful place unattached to societal constraints or limitations.

How would you describe your music and your performing style?

I love creating beautiful melodies that are dreamy, emotional and often reflective in nature. It is as if the music tells a story, stirring images, feelings and memories, remaining free and open to be perceived through each listener’s own unique perspective or point of reference thus re-creating a very personal interpretation. My training in classical music has always been a solid base for my performing style but it has evolved into a more intuitive and personal one, especially when I decided to start playing my own compositions.

I love performing in one cohesive, uninterrupted flow of music expression and my compositions are written interlinked to each other, as if one gives birth to the next one. My goal is to bring people together in a way that feels more intimate or personal, where they are part of the experience and merge into the music through which they can create their own impressions, emotional world and deeper understandings or reflections on themselves and life.

What Others Say

To me, Valentini is a seasoned composer. I adore her style, which can be felt in the depths of my Soul. The flow of each piece is expressed in such a diligent and authentic way that it soothing, precious and magical. Furthermore, I am extremely honored that her first Debut Album “Reflections” was dedicated to me and my Soul – eternally grateful to you, Valentini!
